My brother actually broke his bowl in a similar but much easier way. While it could work (people smoke bowls outside when it's cold) it is undoubtedly a needless risk.
Going from freezing temperature to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit is a big risk to your piece and not worth it at all. This is relevant because GLASS BREAKS when there is a dramatic SHIFT in TEMPERATURE. It's plausible with a bong because you could freeze the whole bong without ever freezing the bowl and the downstem to the bong is more than likely much thicker than that of a typical spoon pipe. NO! I can't believe this hasn't been answered in a couple posts.
